When we talk of the term “short hair,” there are usually many areas for confusion. Do we mean short hair that falls to the middle of the neck? Or something like a boy’s cut like Halle Berry’s? Like many things, the term “short hair” is relative. What someone sees as short may be seen as medium-length by another. Perhaps it’s better if we define short hair in contrast to long hair, since long hair seems easy enough.

Now, for the purpose of this article, let’s create some simple definitions: If your hair falls beyond your shoulders, it’s long. If it stops short of your shoulders, it’s medium-length. If it falls to the center of your nape or if it’s cut any shorter, that would be considered short.

Stylists usually cut short hair in such a way that it already has a style of its own. As many people say, short hair has a ‘wash-and-wear’ type of style. People with short hair usually just step out of the bathroom, comb it a bit, and let it air dry. This lack of complication is what makes short hair desirable to many.

But how about making it more complex, like styling it in an updo? Immediately, you can hear people say, “Impossible!” To which you can actually reply, “Not really.” Updos are for everyone, and while having short hair may deprive you of the chance to braid your hair so that it can be wound around your head, you can still use the length of your hair to your advantage.

What is important for a short hair updo is to prepare it so that your hair has a lot of texture. Use rollers or curling iron to produce fine curls that will definitely add character to your hair. These can now be styled in many different ways. You can lather gel on a flat comb and rake it through your hair upwards, so that all the curls are concentrated at your crown.

You can also rake it towards the back so that the curls are at the back midline of your scalp, then just secure it with bobby pins and accent with different accessories. After all, current trends are working to your advantage. Short, curly hair usually makes for messy updos, which is actually what a lot of people are aiming for, following the updos that many celebrities wear on the red carpet.

For formal events like proms or a homecoming banquet, don’t be distressed over that short hair. Experiment. Innovate. And come out on top.

Long Hair Updo Pick: The Messy ‘Do

From what I’ve observed from the vast number of celebrity hairstyles as photographed on the red carpet, the trend can be summed up in very few words: Messy is IN, sleek and straight is OUT. Just look at the latest updos sported by such celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Heidi Klum, and Jennifer Lopez. These are some of the most colorful and interesting girls in show business nowadays, and their hair has complimented this image.

Why is a messy updo a perennial favorite among many people, including stylists to the stars? Simply put, a messy updo brings out the texture and character in your hair. Like many things in everyone’s body, you can use your hair to make you stand out. The messy updo is fun and creative, and you can look romantic and sultry in it as well. In addition, you don’t have to use a whole lot of styling agents to achieve the messy long hair updo look: all you need are rollers or a curling iron, and some bobby pins. Of course, you can always accessorize for even more style.

The messy updo is so versatile in accommodating the different degrees of elegance in any event. It can be used during a night out, in a homecoming banquet, at your relative’s wedding, and even as a way to make you look different during casual Fridays. Its many variations and its flexibility are just two of the reasons why this easy long hair updo is our favorite.

The Updo

Your hair is one of the most versatile parts of your body. It can be cut, spun, twisted, styled, and even hardened in such a way that it looks like it defies gravity (just look at Marge Simpson). The wonderful thing about choosing an updo for long hair is that it makes you look a lot different than your usual appearance. Getting your hair away from your face draws attention to your beautiful features, and people will appreciate the care and effort you put into styling your hair.

In addition, updos for long hair make a person look elegant, even when paired with ratty old jeans or an oversized shirt. It can even make you look sultry and romantic. Depending on the occasion, you can always choose from a wide range of updos for long hair to suit your needs. What’s even better, you can even invent your very own updo!

Sleek and Elegant

Updos for long hair that are neatly styled is a commonplace sighting. Nevertheless, the look is timeless. Just look at all the celebrities gracing the red carpet and see how they have styled their hair. You cannot see any stray hair in sight, and this makes them look untouchable, goddess-like.

You can achieve your very own sleek and elegant updo for long hair by preparing your hair in a certain way. Since you want to tame it so that nothing goes out of place, prepare to use a lot of styling agents and mousse before you twist and spin your hair into a bun. Using other appliances such as an iron is also highly recommended to achieve sleek, straight hair. However, remember to avoid making it too sleek – you might end up having your hair stubbornly slipping from barrettes or elastics.

Messy and Fun

In contrast with the sleek and sophisticated style, another updo for long hair that is easy to create is one that looks messy. Messy updos for long hair are becoming more popular perhaps because of how different it is from the strict, tight bun.

Messy updos work best with curly hair. So, in preparation for a messy updo for long hair, you will need your trusty hair dryer, some rollers, or a curling iron. They can be styled in any way you want - the trick is to make it look natural and not over-styled.

Preparation is the Key

In styling updos for long hair the easy way, remember that preparation is essential. The final outcome of the updo you’re planning depends on how you styled your hair before putting it up. Once you have achieved the ‘base’ from which you will construct the updo, it’s smooth-sailing all the way.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Updos

“You look different today,” my beloved said to me once while we were having dinner. I smiled demurely and said, “Really, why do you think so?” And he answered, “Something with your hair. It makes you look sexy.”

This was the greatest compliment I have ever received since my mom praised me for taking my first baby steps. Well, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but you know what I mean. It feels good for your beloved to say that you look beautiful and sexy.

At that time, I was wearing this simple updo that I did myself. Basically, I made an updo without sleeking it with styling products so much, so it looks kind of messy and sassy. I let the ends stick out from the bun, while the rest of my hair was treated with some styling agents that added volume to it. I made sure that some tendrils framed my face, concealing some parts of my ear. Through this, I was able to show off my greater assets and conceal some of my less-than-nice features (I have often been teased about having big ears that rival those of Prince Charles’).

Creating your own updo is fun, and personally, I find it therapeutic. Having a new updo makes you look like an entirely different person, and it allows you to be an entirely different person as well. Try it some time.

Your hair is undoubtedly one of the most versatile parts of your body, and its mere appearance can make or break the look you want to achieve. Whether it’s just for work or school or a crazy night out, there are different hair styles for different occasions.

Sometimes, when I’m feeling a bit experimental, I try on different looks just to see if there is one look that suits a particular occasion. While there are no hard and fast rules for it, I found that nothing suits gala and black-tie events more than an updo. Don’t believe me? Then look at all those red carpet pictures of celebrities. In almost 9 out of 10 pictures, women had their hair styled in some variant of an updo.

What they have, and common people like us don’t, is the luxury of having enough money to pay for stylists. After all, when it really comes down to it, would you spend your hard-earned cash just to make you look good for one night and then starve for the next few weeks?

This is why it is important to learn how to make an updo by yourself. Not only will it save you money, you can experiment and choose which updo will look good on you. One simple updo I find easy to do looks like an elegant double bun. To do this, split your hair from above the right ear to above the other ear. Hold that part in place while smoothing out the remaining hair. Now (you may need some styling products for this) roll your hair towards your scalp, as if you were wrapping it around a roller. Secure it to your scalp with pins. Do the same with the remaining hair.

See how easy it is? Of course, it will take some practice before you fully perfect the Do It Yourself Updo, but you have all the time in the world. Experiment and find your inner stylist.

This is a fantastic style that is going to be popular for this years Homecoming season. If you have long hair and can spare the cash for a stylist or have a friend who is talented with the curling wand then this hair updo is for you.

When considering for a Pinned Up Ringlet style, you should take into account your face shape. Although this updo style will work on just about any face shape, it can be worn slightly different for different shapes. For instance, if you have a Oval or heart shaped face then you will look beautiful by just wearing the ringlets straight up. For a square face you may want to consider drawing a couple of ringlets over your cheek area to help soften your face. For A round shape face you should try playing with some side parted bangs or try adding a bit of height in the crown.
This is a simple updo hair style that is both easy to create and looks stunning. It is basically made up of ringlets and is simply pinned up in a messy but organized way. A paradox I know but the look is just so stunning. Be sure to practice this one a few weeks in advance.

The unbearable heat of summer would make someone contemplating growing her hair long seem insane. Who would want additional insulation when the sun is doing its mightiest to stroke you out with heat? Maybe people who got their hair cut short had the right idea. But when they go to a salon to get their hair styled in an updo, they might be met with incredulous looks from stylists who have this firm and stubborn belief that only those with long hair can ever hope to have a great updo.

But this belief is passe. Young hairstylists and those who follow fashion trends are now saying that the updo is not an exclusive luxury for those with long tresses anymore. In fact, the more avant-garde updos are made with “less canvas,” so to speak. Short hair has challenged these stylists, and they came up with stunning solutions to the “problem.”

Stunning updos have been made on people who had short hair. With the wonders of curling irons and newer hair accessories, short hair updos are making waves among celebrities and laymen alike. Keira Knightley is one such celebrity who had tossed the notion of long hair being necessary for an updo. Styling short hair into an updo is easily done by curling hair into tight ringlets and holding it back with a wide headband with a gorgeous design. Voila! A short-hair updo that is worthy of the most illustrious red carpets and hallowed halls.

Just the other day I was browsing through an entertainment magazine and marveled at how much space each magazine reserves just for praising a celebrity’s choice of gown or look. It’s true that many entertainment writers make much money just by simply criticizing if a look can be considered ‘fab’ or ‘flop.’ What is often overlooked is the importance of one’s hairstyle when appearing together with the outfit. If the outfit looks like it came straight from Versace’s drawing board but the hair simply doesn’t “make it work” (as Tim Gunn of Project Runway fame will say), the whole outfit is going to be a disaster.

The right updo will do wonders to glam up any event that anyone attends. In fact, simply pulling your hair back and styling it differently will make a few heads turn, especially if you’re trying a new look. The perfect updo in the world is one that looks like it took you three and a half days to style, but in reality only took you thirty minutes to an hour at most.

I have this suspicion that with the wide variety of updos in the world today, at least a third of those were made by accident. That is, the stylist was trying on for a look but he or she put the wrong pin or the wrong clump of hair in the wrong place, and the result was more beautiful than he or she had imagined. Despite this, styling your hair in an updo becomes easy when you have a clear idea about what look you would like to project. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Invest in hair styling creams and lotions, plus lots and lots of accessories, and perhaps you can create an updo that will inspire Angelina Jolie next Oscar season.

Have you ever wondered what your new ‘do would look like colored in different ways? With so many color choices, it’s easy to be overwhelmed and a little anxious about changing your hair color as it may not turn out the way you hoped.

At TheHairStyler.com, we hope to make your choice a little bit easier by showing you how simple it is to see what the same haircut would look like in all different colors.

This month we have chosen to look at a medium texture, medium length concave bob to give you a better understanding about what kind of impact color choice makes to your cut.

The Cut
This style has edge and funk written all over it with its razored asymmetric lines and random layers cut throughout to make a dramatic statement.
The Back: has been razored at different lengths with the shortest length sitting in the middle and long random pieces finishing the look through to the sides.

Blonde With Dark Brown Highlights
Dark Red

Mocha Brown

This is a creative color which features a two tone effect of brown/red highlights to give the cool blonde tone a hint of warmth and to really show off the face framing layers to perfection. This color will work best on olive, peaches and cream, and fair to light skin tones.
We all love our red tones but can sometimes be a little wary about having them done as red is a very bright and out there color. This hair color needs a lot of care but it really does complement this artistic style completely making the cut, style and color look fantastic. This color will look best on olive and dark complexions.
If you love to keep your colors simple and effective then this is the perfect tone for you. This color will give your hair a gorgeous glow but will also show off the cut in all its glory. This tone will suit pale to light, olive, peaches and cream and dark complexions. It is quite a neutral color.
Honey Blonde

Copper Blonde

Dark Violet

This warmish blonde can complement your style in all the right ways, but it is quite high maintenance and regrowth touch ups will be needed regularly to keep this color always looking its best. This color will suit fair to light and peaches and cream complexions.
If you love to stand out then this true copper blonde style is the way to go. This style will really show off every inch of this edgy cut. This color will work well on peaches and cream and pale to light complexions.
If you love black tones but are a little scared to go that dark, why not try this deep violet? It’s not black but will give you a good indication of what very dark hair will look like on you. It of course looks great with this cut and will work best on olive, pale to light and dark complexions.
